"See ya at the debates, bitches"

What a wonderful week. As Paris entered the US presidential race and the Beijing Olympics commenced I installed three separate 3-way switches for the lighting in our kitchen. Three seemed like a lot. Then I saw this:

Its a link to an Ikea kitchen where you can turn all the lights on and off! Fun. So I am adding one more separate switch.

Maybe two more switches.

That is the British Ikea link, I guess the Brits are more into lighting than we are?

Whoa Ikea Australia, I had never seen kick board lighting. Like low-rider undercarriage lights.

This is our Ilea kitchen as currently envisioned:

Imagine a microwave fan above the range, the software was screwing up. We are still debating upper corner cabinets. I think they are overrated as the space in the back corner is hard to access. Heather thinks all that extra space is great. The debates continue, but I hope to compromise on the last details and order the cabinets in the next two weeks.

post 1.1b

So it’s the 6th of August already! We moved into this house a year ago this month.

Our new double set of double hung windows is finally in. The kitchen was noticeably quieter right away, and will be much less drafty. We made the frame from reclaimed wood bought at Urban Ore in Emeryville. The sash’s and sliders are Marvin Tilt-Pacs, with low-e insulated glazing and painted wood on the indside white powder-coated aluminum outside. For the price the tilt-pacs were the nearest affordable match to what the original windows would have been. We replaced an aluminum sliding window that was probably installed in the 70’s. It had air leaks all over, and was only single pane. We raised the window sill height to above counter height so I could put a sink under it and have more counter space. Raising the sill meant I had to replace some exterior siding. I notched the new siding boards into the old so they would hold together without a noticeable seam. All of this is in the photos, here:

Yup, I still have some trim pieces to install.
